Planting

Thursday was a big day for the garden - we planted our first seeds!

Although Dov and I helped a little bit, most of the seeds were planted by the teacher's aides for the youth center. The teacher's aides are all local Balinese teenagers who know English well enough to help out in the classroom. When you are trying to teach English to complete beginners, it can be very helpful to have someone in the classroom who can translate when necessary. Jose wanted to get them on-board and interested in the whole gardening project, so they got to plant the first seeds. The seeds are being started in our "nursery" to protect the baby plants from the harsh Balinese sun and the strong rains that occur here during the rainy season. By Monday we may be able to see some seeds that have sprouted, and with in a week or two we should be able to start moving plants into our raised beds. So far we have planted beans, corn, chilies, tomatoes, and eggplant. Unfortunately Dov and I are only here for another 2 weeks, and nothing will be edible by then. Jose said that he will send us pictures of the garden once things get big, but seeing photos is not nearly the same as being able to taste the veggies. If we want to sample some of the produce we will have to come back to Bali again.
