Working hard

The garden at Bumi Sehat has 13 raised beds. Earlier today Dov and Jose were working hard shoveling dirt to finish filling the beds at the far end. We also spent a lot of time today mixing rice husks in with the soil. It will help to keep the soil light and airy, which is much better for the plant roots. Once things are growing they will also be using rice husks as the mulch to keep in moisture, and to keep out weeds. We are about halfway through preparing all the beds, but tomorrow we get to starting planting things!

The picture on the left shows Dov sitting in the new hut that was built. It has 6 trees as supports - 3 trees on each side - so it is almost a sort of tree house. It is right next to the garden, and this is where our English classes will be taught starting on Monday. The students at this location will be learning about organic gardening as well as getting standard English lessons. There is also a lot of work underway to create a Warung (or eatery) about 50 feet away that will be all organic and will incorporate vegetables that have been grown in the garden.
Today we took a very long walk, in the heat, where we thought we got completely lost in the middle of Bali somewhere (it turns out that we were going the right directions, but finding street signs or street names in most of Bali is close to impossible). Between all the walking and then all the gardening, we've been working up quite an appetite, plus we are exhausted. It's bedtime.
